Specimen is a gothic-themed animated chat widget for Twitch, framing every message in moth-and-curio artwork with real badges, alerts, and emotes built in. I designed it like a small cabinet of curiosities, where live moths settle over the frame as your chat moves.
Specimen is a gothic-themed animated chat overlay built for StreamElements, designed around a curio-drawer scene where live moths drift across the frame as chat moves. It installs in one click through the StreamElements widget importer and connects with just your Twitch channel name. Every message carries real Twitch badges — subscriber, VIP, moderator, founder, Prime, and bits — so your community's status shows without extra setup. Sub, tip, cheer, raid, and follow alerts each get their own accent color inside the chat feed. Emotes from Twitch, 7TV, and BTTV render inline, alongside an ignore list and a hide-commands option. With 37 settings covering side, alignment, message count, hide-after timing, entrance animation, fonts, sizes, and color, you can recolor the whole scene to match your palette. It runs as an OBS browser source, with a built-in preview page for testing chat and alerts before you go live.
The widget works alongside your existing StreamElements and OBS setup, so there's nothing extra to install beyond the import. Hide-after timers and entrance animations keep the chat log tidy during fast-moving raids, and the ignore list keeps bot commands out of view. Every color in the scene — background, text, badge glow, moth wing — can be changed to match the rest of your layout.
Specimen suits streamers building a dark academia, cabinet-of-curiosities, or horror-adjacent channel look, especially around Halloween or year-round gothic branding. Download the files once and they're yours to reuse across future streams and channel refreshes. If chat is the one element viewers watch most during quiet moments, this is built to make it worth watching.
