Tempest is a hand-drawn gothic chat widget for Twitch, framing every message in storm-lit artwork with softly animated rain, drips and crackling lightning. I designed it for streamers who want their chat to feel like a scene from a quiet, thunderous night rather than a plain text box.
Tempest is a gothic-themed animated chat widget built for Twitch streamers who want their chat to feel like part of a storm. Every message appears inside hand-drawn thunderstorm artwork, with moving rain, dripping glass and flashes of lightning animated behind the names. The widget displays six real Twitch badge types — subscriber, VIP, moderator, founder, Prime and bits — next to each name. It also recognizes Twitch, 7TV and BTTV emotes for extra flair in chat. 5 alert types — sub, tip, cheer, raid and follow — appear directly inside the feed, each with its own accent color so events stand out from regular messages. Streamers can adjust 37 settings covering side, alignment, message count, hide-after timing, entrance animation, fonts, sizes and colors, so the storm can be tuned to any channel's palette. It installs through the StreamElements widget importer and runs as an OBS browser source, with a preview page included for testing alerts before going live.
I wanted a chatbox that felt cozy even while it's storming — dim light, soft glow, nothing harsh on screen during long streams. It suits horror, cottagecore-at-night, dark fantasy or just moody aesthetic channels that lean into atmosphere over neon. Once you own Tempest, the files are yours to reuse across future streams and setups.
Getting it running takes about a minute: import the widget into StreamElements with your Twitch channel name, then add it to OBS as a browser source. Ignore lists and hide-commands are built in, so you can keep spam-free chat without extra bots. If you ever want a different mood, the colors and animation timing are yours to change at any time.
